Apr 02 , 2021

Summer is coming. Have you bought sunscreen yet? There are so many sunscreens on the market that it's hard to make a choice. And there are a variety of sun protection labels do you know what they mean? Let's explore the secrets of these labels and numbers.

SPF

SPF is short for Sun Protection Factor, which measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays and protects skin from sunburn. And the number after SPF is the multiple of the time it takes to prevent sunburn. For example, if 20 minutes of exposure to a certain level of sunlight will cause sunburn, applying an SPF30 sunscreen will ensure that your skin will avoid sunburn for 600 minutes (20 minutes multiplied by 30 times). In general, the higher the SPF, the better the sun protection.

PA+

PA is the abbreviation for Protection Grade of UVA, and "+" represents the ability of the product against UVA rays. PA is an indicator to evaluate the ability of sunscreen products to prevent skin from tanning. Usually, when people are exposed to a certain amount of sunlight for 30 minutes, they will begin to tan. The PA rating is as follows: PA+ means some UVA protection, PA++ means moderate UVA protection, PA+++ means high UVA protection, and PA++++ means extremely High UVA protection. In general, the more "+", the better the sun protection.

UVB & UVA

Sunscreen SPF focus on UVB which is short wave ultraviolet. Human exposure to UVB for a short period of time may cause skin redness and sunburn. Prolonged exposure to UVB can damage skin genes and lead to genetic mutations that can even lead to skin cancer. And sunscreen PA focus on UVA which refers to long wave ultraviolet. Skin exposure to UVA in short term may lead to skin sensitivity and decreased tolerance. Over the long term, UVA can cause skin pigmentation, senescence and even inflammation.

Do you think the higher the SPF or PA of a sunscreen, the better it works? In fact, the protection of sunscreen is also limited, there is no need to pursuit high index excessively, according to your own need to use the appropriate sunscreen, pay attention to the sun shading and use of sunscreen products, is the most simple and effective way of sun protection.
